How to Decide: New or Used

It’s time to answer the age-old question when it comes to car buying: new or used? At Beach Ford, we know that car buying is a personal decision, but we hope our years of expertise will help you along the way. Here are the questions we recommend asking yourself when deciding between a new or used car.

 What’s my budget?

You will find this question at the top of every list – and for good reason. Deciding what payment will fit comfortably in your budget can sometimes rule out new cars completely. Many sources recommend a 50/30/20 split of your take-home pay each month. 50% going to “needs” (this is where your car payment will be), 30% to “wants”, and 20% to savings

If you just did that math, you may feel like that breakdown doesn’t work for you – and that’s okay! If you want a new car, it may not fit into your “needs” category. You decide how your “wants” category is spent. Want a new car? Balance your budget appropriately. Want to spend this category elsewhere? A used car may be the answer for you.

How long do I want to drive it?

Is your plan to buy this car and drive it until you can’t anymore? Or are you buying this car with more short-term goals in mind? If you’re buying for the short-term, it may be better to look into a used vehicle. Used cars depreciate less over time and are more likely to return a higher percentage of your purchase price if traded-in soon after. If you are planning to be the only owner of this car, the eventual trade-in value is unlikely to be a deciding factor.

What features are my “must-haves”?

If you’ve been keeping an eye on the auto industry recently, you’ll have seen incredible advancements in technology. Many new cars offer modern features including rear and side view cameras, remote start, keyless entry, touchscreens, ambient lighting, and dual-zone climate control.

If you have a wish list of features, it will be easier to work with your dealer to pick the package that is right for you. Trying to find the features that you want in a used car is possible, but it certainly isn’t as easy.

What kind of warranty am I looking for?

Depending on how old the car is, or where it is purchased from, it may or may not come with a warranty. For some, the lower sticker price of a used car is more appealing, but they may not be thinking of the repair costs down the road. Warranties can offer peace of mind and can help to protect you from unwanted and unexpected repairs.

At Beach Ford, our new car inventory offers a 3 year/36,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, as well as our Lifetime Powertrain Warranty. Like New at Used Car Prices selection offers gently used cars that are warrantied like they are brand new. A Ford Certified Pre-Owned vehicle comes with a Ford Extended Warranty, and our Beach Ford Quality Used cars come with our standard Lifetime Powertrain Warranty. Our Beach Bargains selection offers used cars under $12,000. These are Virginia State Inspected and offer a 7-day return policy, but do not come standard with a warranty.

We have created four used car categories because we know how overwhelming it can be to buy a new (or new to you) car. With an inventory ranging from brand new cars to our Beach Bargains – Beach Ford is a great place to get started.
